Milford Wellness Village Offers Lifeline for Families Caring for Loved Ones

When Rachel Ellis’s 80-year-old mother, Margaret, began struggling to keep up with doctor visits and medications, she feared her mom would no longer be able to live alone. Margaret, a retired school librarian and Milford resident of more than four decades, had always been fiercely independent. But after a recent hospitalization and growing signs of fatigue, Rachel knew they needed help.

“I wanted her to stay in her home, but I didn’t want to burn out trying to make it all work,” said Rachel, a full-time working mom with two teenagers. “Milford Wellness Village brought everything we needed under one roof.”

Milford Wellness Village is a one-of-a-kind, community-based campus that brings together more than 25 healthcare and support providers. Located at 21 W. Clarke Ave., the Wellness Village offers primary care, rehabilitation, pharmacy services, adult day programs, transportation, and more—serving older adults, caregivers, and families in one walkable, centrally located setting.

“We built the Wellness Village to care for the entire family—from aging parents to young children,” said Lon Kieffer, executive director of the Village. “Whether you’re helping a loved one recover from a stroke, managing chronic illness, or raising kids while caring for your parents, we’re here to support you.”

Aging in Place with Dignity

For seniors like Margaret Ellis, the Village offers a realistic path to aging safely at home. After recovering from a brief hospital stay at Polaris Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Margaret transitioned back home with help from Village Primary Care, which now manages her heart condition and arthritis.

Instead of juggling multiple doctor’s offices and long commutes, Rachel can now coordinate her mother’s medical needs, prescriptions, and day programs in a single location.  “Her pharmacy, doctors, rehab team—they’re all connected,” Rachel said. “It’s a huge relief not to have to repeat everything or drive all over Sussex County.”

Comprehensive Support for Daily Life

In addition to medical care, Milford Wellness Village addresses the everyday challenges of living independently:

  1. Medical Equipment & Supplies provided Margaret with a walker, grab bars, and fall alert tools.
  2. Transportation Services ensure she gets to her appointments and community events safely.
  3. Adult Day Care Programs at Pace Your Life offer supervised social time, crafts, and even a book club—Margaret’s favorite with transportation for her.
  4. Social Services connected her with a local widows’ group and helped her volunteer part-time at the library.

Meanwhile, Rachel completed a caregiver education workshop from Easter Seals at the Village, learning how to manage medications, monitor safety at home, and access future planning resources.

Designed for Whole Families

Milford Wellness Village supports more than just seniors. Its services are designed to meet the needs of multigenerational families:

  1. A working parent can get a diagnosis for her son, the drugs he needs, place her sick child in special daycare in one place.
  2. A single mom trying to care for her father living at home can have him in day care where he can see a doctor, get occupations therapy and his drugs, hot meal and the social interaction he need while she is at work.
  3. A caregiver recovering from her own surgery can receive outpatient therapy and follow-up care on site where her child is in daycare and refill her prescription for the meds she needs.

“This is what integrated care really looks like,” Kieffer said. “It’s not just medical help—it’s community, connection, and peace of mind.”

A Model for the Future—Right in Milford

Milford Wellness Village isn’t another plan for the future—it represents a new model of community care that is already operating in Milford. While many families struggle to navigate fragmented health systems spread across counties, the Wellness Village offers a fully integrated, walkable campus where medical providers, social workers, therapists, and support staff work together every day.

“What’s happening here in Milford is truly innovative and one of the first in the county,” Kieffer said. “We’re creating the kind of coordinated, whole-person care that healthcare systems across the country are still trying to figure out.”

At the Wellness Village, services are not only co-located—they’re coordinated. Providers share information, streamline referrals, and design care plans with the whole family in mind. This approach eliminates common pain points like duplication of services, missed diagnoses, and disjointed communication between providers.

Milford residents don’t have to travel to Wilmington, Philadelphia, or Baltimore to access this kind of high-touch, forward-thinking care. It’s already happening—right here in their own backyard.

“This is something to be proud of,” Kieffer added. “The people of Milford have access to a model of care that communities around the country are still dreaming about. It’s local, it’s personal, and it works.”

For seniors like Margaret, caregivers like Rachel, and families across Sussex County, Milford Wellness Village is proving that healthcare can be community-based, compassionate, and comprehensive—all at once. “We’re not just helping seniors live longer—we’re helping families live better,” Kieffer said.
